Now you can test yourself in the latest BBC vocabulary quiz. Don't worry if you find it difficult! Most of the words aren't exactly commonly used ... Still, it's a nice little quiz and fun to do when no-one else is looking over your shoulder.

3. HOW MANY ENGLISH WORDS DO YOU KNOW AND USE?

There's an interesting article in the BBC Magazine this week, ‘The words in the mental cupboard’.

It's about the huge and fast-growing number of English words in use - and how, in the UK , there is concern that children don't know enough words in English.

The article quotes Professor David Crystal, plus there are examples of some of the latest (weird and wonderful?) words to enter the language.

It doesn't really mention varieties of English, apart from British and American. But, if World Englishes are taken into consideration ... well, now we're talking numbers!

A new offering from the Office of English Language Programs, Shaping the Way We Teach English, is a 14-module teacher training video series developed and produced in cooperation with the University of Oregon. The series incorporates classroom scenes from around the world and is accompanied by a teacher trainer manual and additional readings.

5. TEACHING AND LEARNING THROUGH SOCIAL NETWORKS

In 2007, the British Council conducted market research into how the Internet has affected the preferred learning styles of young people wanting to learn English around the world. The results of this research suggest that if teachers are to remain relevant and effective, then they need to use 'learning technologies' to help students reach the world outside the classroom.
